Mark walked down the mine’s main corridor at that very moment, son Markie in tow. Markie was carrying the spanking new .22 rifle he got for his birthday.

They were headed toward the back of the mine for Markie’s shooting lesson and took a detour to say hello to the women.

Mark kissed Hannah and said hello to Sarah.

Markie said, “Hi Mommy. Hi Aunt Sarah.”

His dad got right to the point.

“Did that guy call you yet?”

“No. He’s calling back at three.”

“Well, you know how I feel about the whole thing. No good can come of you communicating with other preppers outside the camp.”

“Honey, I agree with you. But I need to find out if what he’s saying is legitimate. I mean, Jason is real. He wasn’t pretending to be somebody he wasn’t. And he had no way of knowing the names of my doctors unless he was talking to someone at Joint Base Lackland. So I have to think there’s at least some legitimacy in what he’s saying.

“I just can’t imagine why they’re in trouble and being court martialed.

“I mean, when I knew them they were both high ranking military officers and good men. Colonel Wilcox had a reputation for being grumpy and hard to deal with sometimes, but he wasn’t that way with me.”

Sarah added, “What I’d like to know is how could you possibly help them out… be the ‘only one able to save them’ as your old friend said.

“That just doesn’t make any sense to me. If all they want you to do is give a character reference I’m sure they could find a whole slew of people they actually worked with instead of a patient who knew them for just a few short weeks. I think there’s more to the story your Jason guy wasn’t telling you.”

“Look, honey,” Mark told Hannah. “You know my feelings on this. I’d prefer you just ignore the guy completely and pretend he never called you.”

“I can’t do that, Mark. Those two doctors saved my life. If I can return the favor I need to do so.”

“Honey, please let me finish.

“I was going to say that my preference would be you don’t talk to them again. But I know your mind’s made up.

“So at least, when you talk to them, be very careful. Don’t give away anything that will help them out if they’re after our mine and what’s in it.

“Remember the Army showed up before trying to convince us they were our friends and just wanted to steal our livestock.

“They might be trying the same thing again.”

“Mark, that was a rogue Army colonel. These are Air Force doctors.”

“Honey, they’re both in the same military. They work together. And to me one colonel is the same as another regardless of the color of their uniform.

“I don’t trust any of them.”

“Don’t worry, baby. I won’t give away our location, or any clues that might help them find us. Frank told me once that ham radio waves aren’t traceable without sophisticated equipment.

“I won’t give our
